OUR LEADERSHIP TEAM

Our History

Grace Baptist Church, formerly known as Faith Baptist Church, was planted by an American missionary, Vince Kobosh, in 1996.

After one year, Pastor Kobosh returned to the USA and the ministry was handed over to Tom Wilmoth, also an American missionary, and Gavin van Zutphen, a South African church planter and pastor.  Together they chartered and constituted the church as Faith Baptist Church on 6 July 1997.

In 1999 Pastor van Zutphen was called to minister at Grace Baptist Church in Gauteng, leaving Pastor Tom Wilmoth alone until he was later joined by John Frost, a South African missionary in 2000. The church was re-constituted under the name Grace Independent Baptist Church. This was done for 2 reasons, namely to make a clear distinction between ourselves and the ‘word of faith’ and charismatic movements, and to highlight our independence from the Baptist Union.

In 2003, Pastor John Frost returned to Johannesburg to finish his studies and  a year later, Pastor Tom Wilmoth handed the leadership of the church over to an American fellow church planter, Larry Nelson, who had been ministering in Uganda. Under the leadership of Pastor Larry Nelson, the church continued and grew and began meeting in its current location in Kabega Park. In 2007, Pastor Nelson was joined by Ken Westenberger, another church planting missionary.

In 2011, the church, along with Pastor Nelson and Pastor Westenberger, called for Gary Walsh to be the national Pastor of the church. In the same year,  Pastor Gary Walsh, is a South African who moved to Port Elizabeth with his family in 2012. He was sent out of Bethel Baptist Church, where he had been assisting Pastor Gavin van Zutphen in Gauteng since 2010. Pastor Walsh served as pastor of Grace Baptist Church from 2012 till 2016, when he received the call to Pastor a church in the Krugersdorp area.

After Pastor Walsh had resigned as pastor of Grace Baptist Church, the church extended a call to Pastor Kevin Hall and his family. Pastor Kevin Hall is also an American missionary who has been ministering in South Africa since 2006, in the townships of South Africa while learning isiXhosa. Pastor Kevin Hall led the church until 2022, when Pastor Stefan Ras was officially nominated and confirmed as the new Pastor.
